Gilmaur Kits-  General

Gilmaur diesel loco kits are made from etched brass with lost wax and white metal castings, which makes up into an accurate superstructure and underframe.

The etchings are made from 0.018" brass, so only light soldering equipment is required. Extensive use of tab and slot design makes for accurate location of parts and easy assembly. All parts are accurately cut out and bend lines are scored. The hoods, decks and some other parts are pre-formed.

See the Diesel Truck Kits page for products from Gilmaur and other suppliers.

The kits are designed to be powered by the old-style Weaver drive systems described on the Truck Kits page, or by drive systems from CLW or All-Nation.

Gilmaur kits are supplied in a good quality black box large enough to hold the finished model.

In the box you will find:

           Etched Parts set

Pre-bent parts (e.g. Hood, Deck, etc)

           Brass castings

White metal castings (large and small)

           Nuts and Bolts bag

The Instructions contain Prototype Information, construction options, Safety advice, Assembly Instructions with isometric drawings, a Parts List and an Identification Sheet showing all the etched parts with part numbers.

Assembling a Gilmaur Kit

When Ben Brown built his Gilmaur S-2 he photographed each stage of the assembly as he went along. These pictures show how the model goes together and demonstrate how simple it is to construct.

Gilmaur Kit #15

Alco S-2

Gilmaur's best-selling kit to date, the Alco S-2 was the only switcher permitted to be built during World War II and therefore was bought by most major railroads. The S-2 was built between April 1940 and June 1950, with a total production of 1502, and examples remained in use for many years. Modelers of the steam-to-diesel transition period will find the S-2 an ideal switcher for their layout.

The kit includes parts for a highly detailed Blunt truck, the only kit of this truck available in O scale.

The Gilmaur Hall of Fame contains several  S-2  models, and also a set of photos taken by Ben Brown during the construction of his model which show assembly of the various sub-sections.

Kit price is $245 including shipping and handling.

Gilmaur Kit #08

GE U23B / U30B

The U-Boats were Gilmaur's first kits in the early 1990's. The new kits are completely new, CAD-designed and feature an integrated superstructure and chassis.

Most of these locos were equipped with AAR-B trucks, but some used EMD Blomberg trucks from trade-in units. Weaver make plastic versions of both trucks, and these are available from P&D Hobbies.

Prototype Information   (see also U-Boats page)

In 1966 the 3000HP U30B was introduced and 295 locos were produced until 1975.

The 2300HP U23B was produced 1969-77, totalling 481 locos

The U23B and U30B models are the same except for the long hood. The U23B has six tall doors  and the U30B has eight.

The U33B and U36B carbodies differed from the 3000HP locos in having a wider radiator section.

Contact Gilmaur for models of these locos.
