General Electric began supplying heavy locomotives in the United States in its own name in 1959 with the 2500HP U25B.                              Previously only switchers had been supplied.

Evolution was upward through 2800 HP and 3000 HP units (U28 and U30) to the U33 (3300 HP) and U36 (3600 HP) of 1968.                          All were offered on 4 or 6-wheel trucks- hence the notation UxxB and UxxC.

Car body styles in the GE line underwent continuous rather than radical change, so a wide range of locomotive models can be built from standard components.

GE backfilled its line with a 2300 HP unit in 1968 (U23) and an 1800 HP unit (U18B) in 1976. In 1977 the range of locomotives was relaunched with emphasis on fuel economy as the Dash-7 line. The equivalent to the U23B was the similar looking B23-7.
